PES used one of their Romer Absolute Arms with Integrated scanner and PolyWorks Inspector 3D measurement software to laser line scan the bumper and nearside wing of a BMW 116D.
The customer had asked for the scan of the bumper to be compared to a nominal CAD model so they could see any deviation in the bodywork of their vehicle from when it was designed. The Romer Arm’s portability and flexibility proved vital in being able to scan hard to reach areas of the bodywork. Using PolyWorks allowed flush and gap gauges to be created between panels of the bumper and wing. PES engineers were able to collect 460,000 points per second at an accuracy of <0.1mm. Once all scanned data was taken a colour deviation map was created to output the data and show the deviation of the scanned data to the CAD model.
