PES Metrology used the Leica’s flagship AT960 and T-Scan 5 coupled with industry leading Polyworks 3D Measurement Software to scan a prototype Porsche 919 hybrid sports endurance car.
Reference drift nests were laid out to enable the laser tracker to be moved to numerous positions around the car. The T-Scan 5 measures 210,000 points per second, so a high-end laptop is required for an object of this size. The point cloud data was collected into Polyworks 3D Measurement Software by scanning every surface of the car making sure there was no gaps/holes in the data. Once the scan was complete, the data was cleaned and a polygonal mesh was created and an STL surface model exported.
Data collected in this fashion can be used to assess the vehicle’s dimensional accuracy to design CAD data or used to reverse engineer an As-Built model.
